Custom Rug

PriceFrom $65.00

To care for a custom rug and ensure its longevity, it’s important to follow specific guidelines based on its material, construction, and design. Here’s a general care guide for custom rugs:

1. Vacuum Regularly

  • Frequency: Vacuum at least once a week to prevent dirt and dust from settling into the fibers.
  • Vacuum Type: Use a vacuum without a beater bar for delicate materials. For more durable rugs, a beater bar can be used to lift dirt effectively.
  • Technique: Vacuum in the direction of the pile to avoid damaging the fibers.

2. Rotate the Rug

  • Rotate your rug every 3-6 months to distribute wear evenly, especially in high-traffic areas. This helps prevent uneven fading and indentations from furniture.

3. Spot Clean Spills Immediately

  • Blot, Don’t Rub: When spills occur, use a clean, absorbent cloth or paper towel to blot (not rub) the spill, working from the outside in to prevent spreading.
  • Mild Detergent: Use a mild detergent or rug-specific cleaner. Always test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area before full use.
  • Water-based Stains: For stains like coffee or wine, mix a solution of mild detergent with warm water. Apply it to the area using a soft cloth, then blot dry.

4. Deep Clean Periodically

  • Professional Cleaning: For custom rugs, it’s ideal to have them professionally cleaned every 1-2 years, depending on foot traffic.
  • Steam Cleaning: Some rugs (like synthetic fibers) can be steam cleaned, but be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations first.

5. Avoid Sunlight Exposure

  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading. Use window coverings or shades to protect your rug, or rotate it frequently if it’s in a sun-exposed area.

6. Use Rug Pads

  • Benefits: A rug pad prevents slipping, reduces wear, and provides cushioning. It also allows air circulation under the rug, preventing mold and mildew on hard surfaces.
  • Custom Fit: Make sure the rug pad fits the exact size of the rug to avoid curling or bunching.

7. Address Pet Stains

  • Immediate Action: Blot pet accidents as soon as possible.
  • Deodorizing: Use an enzymatic cleaner to break down odors and stains caused by pets.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from ammonia-based cleaners, as these can worsen pet odors.

8. Shedding for Wool or Natural Fiber Rugs

  • If your custom rug is made from wool or other natural fibers, some initial shedding is normal. Vacuum regularly to manage this.
  • Avoid Over-Vacuuming: For wool, limit vacuuming to once or twice a week to avoid excessive fiber loss.

9. Protect from Furniture

  • Furniture Pads: Use furniture pads or coasters under heavy furniture legs to prevent indentations.
  • Rearrange: Rearrange furniture periodically to allow the rug fibers to recover from pressure.

10. Store Properly

  • When Not in Use: If you need to store the rug, roll it (do not fold), and store it in a cool, dry area. Wrap it in a breathable material like cotton sheets or fabric to avoid mildew and moths.
  • Avoid Plastic Wrap: Never store rugs in plastic as it can trap moisture.

Material-Specific Tips:

  • Wool Rugs: Be mindful of moisture, as wool can absorb liquids easily. Avoid heavy cleaning methods that soak the fibers.
  • Silk Rugs: Silk is delicate and requires professional cleaning for deep stains. Avoid rubbing the fibers too hard when spot-cleaning.
  • Synthetic Rugs: These are generally more resistant to stains and fading, but avoid using high heat (like steam) during cleaning.
